Week 4 Picks — Out to the Woodshed

I am out of the norm…way out of the norm.

Yes, I know, a lot of you already know that but yes it is true.

Of course, this is college football related as I would rather get the pants beaten off me or my team than lose by a play here or a call there.

My rationale is easy…at least we know who the better team was, right?

I have many of each defeat in my sports life but it always seemed that the wide margins were easier to overcome because they could be flushed away quickly. The tough losses, by 1 point, 1 single run, or score, were the contests that ate at our souls for hours because a different call or a different play could have been the difference in a W rather than a L.

Take this past weekend for example:

Florida barely beats UT on a last second bomb into the end zone and all hell breaks loose about Butch Jones’ inabilities to coach in a big game. Now, go to Starkville and look at the Bulldogs uber-domination of LSU in all aspects. Undeniable who the better team was in that contest…#HailState #cowbell #StarkVegas

Off to the Woodshed!

After 3 weeks it is clear I have lost all knowledge of picking college football game. Also, I cannot solely lie on hoping Eli messes up as he appears to be acting the whole #sonknowsbest out to a darn T. We both stunk last week at 3-7 but with his adjusted scoring he movies 29.5 – 10. I moved to a dismal 16 -14 ( which brings back terrible memories of a non so-called push off by Rod Gardner ).

Through 3 weeks Eli has a comfortable lead (and as all FBS teams are competing for the gold trophy), we are here competing for this awesome pancake!

On to this week’s picks:

Top 5

Alabama @ Vanderbilt

We want Bama has become the battle cry around Nashville this week as the ‘Dores are 3-0 and gearing up to face the Tide. The Doors sang a song, Been Down So Long, that goes well with Vandy this week because they have been bottom feeders for so long that this matchup looks like up to them. The Tide will roll, but it will be close late in the 3rd quarter. Too much QB1 Hurts in this one and he methodically drains the energy out of Vandy with his legs.

Cov’s Call — Tide 23 – 10

TCU @ Oklahoma State

The Pokes have a high powered offense and the Horned Frogs exude defense in Fort Worth. This could turn into a beat down of epic proportions because the OSU defense is much improved. Watch out, early! Mike Gundy likes to come out the locker room guns a-blazin’! He is a Man! If TCU can withstand the ferocious early knockout punches this could go down to a last possession ball game. Look for Gary Patterson to bring all sorts of purple heat to disrupt the Cowboy tempo. OSU in a close one.

Cov’s Call — Pokes 31 – 27

Mississippi State @ Georgia

A battle of bulldogs Between the Hedges with a lot at stake in late September. MSU has size and speed all over the field. UGA has the same. MSU has seasoned coach. UGA does not. MSU has veteran QB1. UGA does not. MSU has not had a close game in the 4th quarter — all wins! UGA escaped South Bend with a 1 point win. Those all up to MSU pulling out the win. So, I am all in for the Hairy Dawgs!

Cov’s Call — UGA 24 – 20

Michigan @ Purdue

The biggest crowd ever is expected in West Lafayette this weekend as the Wolverines come to town. Head man Jeff Brohm can flat out coach and he pulls the upset in this one that sets off abnormal activity throughout the Big Ten. Heard it here first!

Cov’s Call — Purdue 23 – 21

USC @ California

The Trojans have had 3 different games each week. Blah, domination, and nerve-wrecking! What does week 4 hold? Will the fans at Berkeley show up or will the Trojan army show out in full force. QB1 Sam Darnold has a field day and rises back up the Heisman race.

Cov’s Call — USC 34 – 20

Next 5

Texas Tech @ Houston

EZCN — Smarter school…Go Cougs!

Cov’s Call — Red Raiders shut down in H-town!

Penn State @ Iowa

EZCN — Nittany Lions will eat up the Hawkeyes.

Cov’s Call — This ain’t Akron, but Iowa ain’t the Buckeyes…PSU escapes.

Florida @ Kentucky

EZCN — Wildcats will swamp up the Gators.

Cov’s Call — Death, taxes, and UF ruining UK’s season.

Washington @ Colorado

EZCN — Huskies will puff their way through Buffs.

Cov’s Call — U-Dub rides Ralphie to a W in Boulder!

Notre Dame @ Michigan State

EZCN — ND will shine through the Spartans.

Cov’s Call — Spartans ride D to a W against not so shiny Golden Domers.

Enjoy this week! Have fun…as I light a campfire out by the Woodshed!

Until next time…
