Week 3 Picks — Eating CROW

football-black-crow-men-s-t-shirt-by-american-apparelI DESPISE losing!

If you know me you know I am super competitive and dislike losing…checkers, basketball, or Cranium…it doesn’t matter. I like to win. Enough said.

As I have aged I have been able to handle the losses better and be more stoic when outcomes don’t go my way.

So, as you can tell the first 2 weeks of our picks have gotten to me a little bit. Now, Eli deserves the credit when it comes to this because he is making great picks and I am not. More power to him.

I am totally rethinking this whole 1.5 points for each correct Eli pick. Just kidding…as it appears he is on pace to beat me by the end of September.

Robert Orben says it best, “The true test of humility is whether you can say grace before eating crow.”

I am eating my crow right now after 2 weeks because I thought helping him out would make it more interesting later in the year. Lesson learned!

Eli followed up a great week 1 with an 8-2 week 2 to bring his overall (adjusted) record to 25-3. I somewhat recovered with a 7-3 tally to move my overall record to 13-7. Time to make up ground.

Top 5

Tennessee @ Florida

Hurricane Irma (apparently not the fabulous LulaRoe tunic) and all her rain / wind almost cancelled this game. If you want high-powered offense maybe a cancellation would be best. The defenses will be in a pressure situation as soon as the ball is kicked off. One, this is the first SEC game for both teams and is a true barometer for rest of the season. Two, both coaches need this W…badly and I am not sure who needs it most or who survives the season with a L.

Cov’s Call — UF 23 – 16

Clemson @ Louisville

Get your pizzas ready! This is going to a supreme contest to watch Saturday night football as one of the best offenses will be pitted against one of the best defenses. The wine and mozzarella cheese is not allowed at this point when a loss could cost either team a shot at major postseason play. This game has been entertaining the last few years and the 2017 version should be no different. LJ8 will get his numbers but expect the Tiger SACK ATTACK defense to wreak havoc in the backfield and once again be the deciding factor in this one score ball game. Heard it here first — A huge special teams play wins it for the Tigers.

Cov’s Call — CU 20 – 17

Kentucky @ South Carolina

This contest has a chance to be the most underrated game of the weekend. Several playmakers reside on both sides of the ball for UK and USC. Willy B will be 2012 UGA-lit for sure as UK rolls in with some uncertainty after 2 mediocre showings. USC uses QB1 Jake Bentley’s – legs – and the versatility of WR Deebo Samuel to end the streak and start 3-0 for the first time since 2012…even though UK covers. Look for WR Shi Smith to have a great game as the ‘Cats secondary try to shut down TE Hayden Hurst, WR Bryan Edwards, and Samuel.

Cov’s Call — USC 28 – 24

LSU @ Mississippi State

Both teams faced lesser competition the first 2 weeks so this is the first true test in 2017. Watch out for QB1 Danny Etling and his short passing game…if effective it could open up holes for RB Derrius Guice and Crew to knife through the cow bells. State has a hailed signal caller as well in Nick Fitzgerald and if he gets his running game going it could be a long night for the Tigers. The young LSU defense could be overwhelmed by the environment or they could be stubborn enough not to make it a big deal. Clanga puts up a valiant effort but CEO and his young bunch find a way to escape Stark-Vegas with a W.

Cov’s Call — LSU 27 – 20

Texas @ USC

The Longhorns make the trek west out to LA hoping to hold reign for the Big 12 conference. I know USC QB1 Sam Darnold and his receivers are licking their chops as they prep for this defense that gave up 50-plus to Maryland. Yes, I repeat Maryland. UT has playmakers on offense to keep up but the Trojans defense played physical last week against a very large Stanford team. Darnold throws for 300 and 3 scores as USC hooks the ‘Horns.

Cov’s Call — USC 45 – 23

Next 5

Ole Miss @ Cal

EZCN — Rebels will declare the Bears.

Cov’s Call — Pac 12 after dark can’t handle a nothing to lose Hotty Toddy.

Kansas State @ Vanderbilt

EZCN — Vandy will rip through KSU.

Cov’s Call — ‘Dores get slammed by Snyder’s purple reign.

Purdue @ Missouri

EZCN — Tigers will frost the ‘Makers.

Cov’s Call — Boilers overheat as Mizzou’s offense runs wild.

Baylor @ Duke

EZCN — Baylor will claw the pitch fork.

Cov’s Call — Bears actually live in NC…AND catch their first Dub.

UCLA @ Memphis

EZCN — Memphis will put the lights out against UCLA.

Cov’s Call — Bruins enjoy ‘early’ wake up call while walking on Beale Street.

This is probably another week of Eli domination that I can’t stop right now.

Side note: We do want to extend our well wishes to all those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. May your recovery be light and your lost memories never be forgotten. We are here if you need us!

Thank you for reading and let me know your comments. We love to hear from you and Eli gets a kick out of your reactions to his picks.

Until next time…
