Week 1 Picks — Get the Popcorn Ready

The countdown begins and you hear the last few kernels pop. 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1!

The microwave door opens and you smell the extra buttered popcorn that is supposed to taste like your local theater, but never really does! Obviously, our family has watched its fair share of movies this summer and the anticipation our kids have for those waning seconds of the corn popping is just like me in the days leading up to college football being on our big screens. Let’s do this!

It is now game week for those Labor Day matchups and our house could not be more stoked.

Welcome to 2017 of Son Knows Best! I have taken the ultimate reign the last few years so we are going to change up the scoring this fall. For every win that Eli gets he will get 1.5 points while my correct picks will be worth the normal 1 point. Now, on to the week 1 picks:

Florida vs. Michigan

Two powerhouse programs battle in Jerry World and offense will come at a minimum. The first team to 20 points wins this contest. UF is still trying to find a QB but some how some way Jim McElwain still wins ball games. On the other side Jim Harbaugh must replace a lot but his teams always play better early in the season. This will be an old school game with field position and defense leading to a W. I like the Gators in both of those categories.

Cov’s Call — UF 21 – 17

South Carolina vs. N.C. State

The Belk Kickoff Classic in Charlotte could be a very entertaining game on both sides of the ball as the Gamecocks have offense and the Wolfpack offer a very stingy defense. I am not sure the USC defense can hold up in the trenches against a pretty solid offensive line. QB Jake Bentley has a productive day with a few TD passes to his skilled receivers Deebo Samuel and Bryan Edwards but their defense will not stop the Pack enough to pull off the victory.

Cov’s Call — NCSU 27 – 23

Florida State vs. Alabama

Outside of LSU in 2011 the teams that have beaten the Tide have possessed great QB play. FSU has one of those in Deondre Francois, but the question for Jimbo’s team is the playmakers around the signal caller. That theory will be tested in this contest. It is so hard to go against Nick Saban in the first game of the season. His QB returns and his RB Bo Scarborough is an absolute beast. I believe the Tide D swallows up Francois and the Noles.

Cov’s Calls — Tide 31 – 17

It appears weather will impact the location of this game but that is nothing new to LSU over the last few years. The Cougars played a game in week 0 but it was a FCS Portland State that gave them a battle. The Tigers will be ready under head coach Ed Orgeron and expect the offense to be different under new OC Matt Canada. The defense of LSU will win this game with a dominant performance.

Cov’s Call — LSU 28 – 13

West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech

This game has the potential to be one of the best of the weekend. WVU is going to score but can VT keep up? Justin Fuente had a great first year in Blacksburg, setting expectations through the roof in year 2. I see the WV offense being too much in this contest.

Cov’s Call — WVU 31 – 24

Next 5

Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech

EZCN — Jackets sting UT in this matchup!

Cov’s Call — Butch Jones’ seat is burning red in Hot-lanta after this L.

Texas A&M @ UCLA

EZCN — TXAM a breeze to the Bruins.

Cov’s Call — Aggies’ visit out west not so Rosey as QB Rosen goes nuts.

Louisville vs. Purdue

EZCN — UL will check mate Purdue.

Cov’s Call — Cardinals use the Heisman to cool the Boilermakers.

Ohio State @ Indiana

EZCN — The Boo-siers will lose to OSU.

Cov’s Call — OSU cracks the Hoosiers in Bloomington.

Kent State @ Clemson

EZCN — The Flashes go out in Death Valley.

Cov’s Call — Tigers turn off upset lights to start the title defense with a big W.

That’s it for week 1. Hope you enjoyed.

Until next time…
