Week 3 saw a lot of great games! From the upset in Iowa City to the battle in Oxford to the big win by Big Red Nation to the Silver Britches sneaking by in CoMo to the interesting PAC-12 after dark win by the Bears over Texas.
Lessons have been learned:
1. Don’t schedule North Dakota State in football (curling or ice skating, but not pigskin).
2. Don’t bet against Bobby Petrino when he has an athlete at QB. My goodness, Lamar Jackson was unreal against Florida State. He made the ‘Nole defense look like a JV defense eating Papa Johns pizza after a walk through practice!
3. Never doubt Michigan State and their toughness. Huge road win for Sparty in the presence of Touchdown Jesus in South Bend! And most fans around the country a big sigh of relief as the Irish are officially out of the 4-team playoff!
Eli waltzed to the tune of 6-4 in week 3 to move him 19-11 (63.3%). I one-upped him (finally!) last week by going 7-3 and moving alongside him at 19-11 (63.3%).
As teams get into the meat of their conference schedule Week 4 should be another 12-plus hours of fun, but some teams have to step up to the plate if they are going to buck trends…especially, looking at you Butch Jones and Tennessee and your losing streak to the Gators!
Clemson @ Georgia Tech
The Tigers have struggled in Atlanta. A loss here would derail a lot of dreams in Pickens County, but I saw a renewed focus last week, albeit against South Carolina State (no offense, literally and figuratively!). The Yellow Jackets seem to be clicking on offense but they haven’t played a defense near what they will see Thursday night. Short week, different offense, and past history on mind leads to a close game that eventually goes to the Tigers…but closer than the experts think!
Cov’s Call–CU-27 GT-23
South Carolina @ Kentucky
The leash for Mark Stoops is razor thin in the Bluegrass as UK’s defense has not gotten any ether since Stoops arrived in Lexington. USC’s defense bent but did not break against East Carolina and held the Pirates to 15 points. I am not sure the USC defense can withstand the run game that the Wildcats will throw at them Saturday night and the Cocky offense will have to out score them…which can’t happen!
Cov’s Call–UK-31 USC-24
Arkansas vs. Texas A&M @ AT&T Stadium
Raise your hand if you thought this game would have 2 teams ranked in the Top 20 before kickoff. Not one, right? Yeah, me either! Power running game meets up tempo spread game! Watch out for the Hogs’ tight ends as a mismatch in this contest and don’t be surprised if the running game has success heading straight at the aggressive Aggie defensive ends. Points have been easy to come by for both squads in this series recently and I see that happening again! Grab the late afternoon caffeine fix as the Aggies get the YUGE win in a game that doesn’t kick until 9 pm EST.
Cov’s Call–Aggies-42 Hogs-38
UGA @ Ole Miss
Both teams are coming off huge clouds after their games in week 3. The problem is that UGA is trying to remain on cloud 9 with a former 5-star freshman QB and Ole Miss is trying to recover from the clouds in the underworld after their loss to Alabama in Oxford. The Bulldogs are riding high with confidence after sneaking out of CoMo with a big road conference win. Chad Kelly has had turnover problems and it plagues him again this weekend that will completely deflate the Rebels chances at SEC title and playoff run. UGA gets a huge win on the road again in an instant classic!
Cov’s Call–UGA-30 UM-27
Wisconsin @ Michigan State
The Big Ten conference made a big statement in their games this weekend but now it is time for them to start beating up on their own. The Badgers got their big win in week 1 while Sparty pulled theirs off on Saturday in South Bend. Wisconsin struggled at home against Georgia State, now placing some doubt on how good they actually are while MSU is rising the confidence wave into this huge conference game. Sparty out muscles the Badgers into the ground.
Cov’s Call–MSU-24 UW-14
Penn State @ Michigan
The Wolverines had their first scare last week and focus will be much higher in practice this week as they prepare for a conference game. Penn State is not that good, struggling on offense as James Franklin try’s to find his way in the western Pennsylvania mountains. The Wolverines flex their muscles and start conference play with a huge win.
Cov’s Call–UM-38 PSU-13
LSU @ Auburn
This game has more ramifications on the coaches than the bowls, playoffs, or players. A Miles loss equals a huge buy out forthcoming for the administration on the bayou. A Malzahn loss starts the talks of who will be leading War Eagle in 2017. The Tiger offense, which looked so good in his first few years as Head Coach, is now struggling and fans are growing bored and frustrated! Interestingly, the same thing is happening in Red Stick so this game has an opportunity to be a 3-2 masterpiece from a few years ago in the SEC.
Cov’s Call–LSU-13 AU–10
Washington @ Arizona
Playing in the desert at night can be scary but the Huskies are talented and the Wildcats are struggling early in the season. Chris Peterson has started the ascension that all PAC-12 coaches were afraid of when he took over the reigns in Seattle! Rich Rod’s seat is getting hotter by the week and a win here would go a long way, but unfortunately that will not happen.
Cov’s Call–UW-28 Arizona-17
Oklahoma State @ Baylor
The first team to 45 points win this one..enough said! These offenses know how to light up a scoreboard and lack any knowledge of how to defend the ball! Watch out for Mason Rudolph and his Cowboy offense will provide some sparks but the Bear offense will be better and pull out the dub in the end!
Cov’s Call–Bears-45 Pokes-35
Florida @ Tennessee
The end of September in the SEC has provided many memories when the Gators and Volunteers play. This one will be no different as UT looks to snap their losing streak or Florida will try to sneak out of East Tennessee with a huge win with back up QB. The team to finish 60 minutes with 22 players will walk away with a victory as each team has been bitten by the injury bug in big ways through the first three games. Kidding aside, UT should win this game but strange things have happened and UF’s defense is pretty good. I believe the UF defense plays well, holding the law firm of Dobbs, Hurd, & Malone in check for most of the game but the many 3-and outs from their putrid offense does them in late in the game. Butch gets his signature win and quiets his critics…for now!
Cov’s Call–UT-21 UF-13
That’s it for week 4 picks. Hope you enjoy and thanks for reading.
