Week 1 might not have been the best opening weekend ever for every team (ie: LSU, Notre Dame, Iowa State, and USC-West), but man, were there some crazy plays all across the 5-day college extravaganza. I would agree that it was the best opening weekend ever because of all the ranked matchups and great contests between historic programs!
LSU’s offense is not any different and I believe Miles has to win out in order to keep his job and with that SEC slate I am not sure if that is possible (time will tell). Is Alabama that good or is USC that bad? And can Houston now run the table?
Our picks for week 1 were pretty much right down the middle, pretty vanilla (sort of like the LSU offense this weekend in northern Wisconsin). Eli went 4-3 and I went 3-4, but Eli did pick Houston to win and USC to come through with a win in the Music City. So, he had the best weekend!
This week we amp it up with the picks to 12 as we celebrate the most boring weekend after one of the best weekend’s ever. There are not too many games that would whet the appetite, but it is college football and there is never a weekend that goes by that football doesn’t need to be on the television. This will be Headline Week, a little synopsis and what the paper will read on Sunday morning.
North Carolina State @ East Carolina
The Wolfpack make the eastern trip Greenville to battle the Pirates in a match-up that the Wolfpack should win. The Pirates defeated an undermanned and declawed Western Carolina team in week 1 while NCSU took down the Tribe from William & Mary. The ACC team should overpower this team in the long run. A big crowd is expected in Greenville, where most teams do not like to go play because of the small, quaint (and very loud) environment.
Cov’s Call—The tough Wolfpack raise the Jolly Roger, Matey!
Pennsylvania State @ Pittsburgh at Heinz Field
The ketchup bottle hosts a YUGE Keystone State battle that James Franklin needs to win desperately…maybe more than Les Miles needs a win over Alabama desperate. We know the Panthers are going to run the ball with cancer survivor James Conner and the Nittany Lions are going to respond smash mouth version of their own. I believe this game comes down to a battle of wills in the second half and who turns the ball over the least.
Cov’s Call—Nittany Lions squeeze out a victory over the inferior ACC-fed felines!
Rice @ Army
The Black Knights host the Owls in West Point as they are coming off an impressive win at Temple during the opening weekend festivities. The Owls played at Western Kentucky last week and get a totally different offense to game plan for this weekend. The Army option onslaught does the Parliament of Owls in over the course of 60 minutes.
Cov’s Call—Landslide! Landslide! The Black Knights motion to move to 2-0!
Troy @ Clemson
The first home game for the Tigers as the Troy Trojans come to Pickens County to try and trick the Tigers into thinking about ACC play down the road. The Trojans are coming off a shellacking of Austin Peay this past weekend while the Tigers escaped the plains of Auburn with a 6-point win against the SEC orange Tigers! The home Tigers get much needed work in after last week’s somewhat confusing win against an SEC opponent…on the road!
Cov’s Call—No Iliad needed from Homer this time; Tigers exploit Trojans Achilles heel all afternoon!
Ohio @ Kansas
Not sure if everyone has seen it or not, but the Jayhawk faithful rushed the field after their week 1 win, which happened to be their first win in football since November 2014. Since then their basketball team has won around 60 games! They get a chance at win No. 2 this weekend as they host the Bobcats, who put up 54 points last week in a 3 overtime losing effort to Texas State. I think Kansas starts a new streak this weekend!
Cov’s Call—Bobcats tie up the Jayhawks and claw their way to 1-1 by way of Rock and Chalk!
UCONN @ Navy
The Midshipmen had to pull a player out of the stands who was sick and did not dress to finish the game. That is how bad on injuries and QB play they had it last week. A victory against the Huskies could go a long way in Annapolis. I believe with their offensive attack they get it. Huskies are not that good.
Cov’s Call—Midshipmen sink the starved Huskies who were looking forward to basketball season!
Tulsa @ Ohio State
The Buckeyes were in mid-season form in week 1 and expect nothing less than that in week 2 against the Golden Hurricanes. JT Barrett will have all day to throw and even when he needs his legs, he will have the speed to run through the Hurricanes. OSU moves to 2-0 and sets up that big matchup in Norman in week 3.
Cov’s Call—Hurricanes can’t crack the Buckeyes’ code and ends up dissipated!
Wake Forest @ Duke
Wallace-Wade Stadium will be rocking Saturday when the Blue Devils host the Demon Deacons. The Blue Devils definitely have the star power to flick WF back to Winston-Salem with a L, but can they make the plays against a fundamental football team that trying to find its way. This game has all the makings of an ACC instant classic with points scored all over the place. Duke finds a will, therefore finds a way!
Cov’s Call—Devils out-smart the Deacons, leaving the Demons searching for a church pew!
Kentucky @ Florida
The Wildcats have lost 29 straight to the Gators….29 straight! Will this be the year? After losing to Southern Miss last week the odds are forever NOT in their favor. The Gators looked sluggish last week against UMASS, but I am certain will come out with better focus and attention to detail this week as they look to get to 1-0 in SEC and look forward to that battle with Tennessee that looms large on the calendar!
Cov’s Call—Wildcats get too close to The Swamp waters; Gators chomp, Gators Romp!
Wofford @ Ole Miss
The SOCON Terriers make their way southwest for a trip to The Grove and Swag Kelly. The Rebs are fresh off a loss against Florida State on Labor Day, a game that they led by 22 points in the 3rd quarter. If you wanted definition of trap game, this is it! Sandwiched between Florida State and Alabama the Terriers will throw the triple-option at the Rebels 50-plus times. Disciplined assignment football will be needed this week in Oxford. I think Freeze’s team wins the game, but not without a scare and new profound knowledge how the Sparkle City boys play football.
Cov’s Call—Terriers frozen in their tracks; Rebels survive Labor Day hangover…barely!
Western Kentucky @ Alabama
The Hilltoppers make the southern trip to Bryant-Denny Stadium to take on the No. 1 team in the country. Their offense is high powered and throws the ball over the yard, but that plays right into Saban’s playmakers and their athleticism. The Tide will not need to lose their momentum or WKU can sneak up on them. I hear Saban rehashing that over and over throughout the process of this week!
Cov’s Call—Tide stomp the Hilltoppers into the Tuscaloosa turf!
SMU @ Baylor
The Mustangs were in this game for most of the first half in 2015 in Dallas. This is a barometer game for the Mustangs to see where their program is and what it needs to take the next step. The Bears are still rolling on offense with interim head coach Jim Grobe, who took over for fired and embattled coach Art Briles. The game should be a great atmosphere in McLane Stadium as the Bears look to move to 2-0.
Cov’s Call—Bears easily ride the Mustangs into the WIN column in week 2!
South Carolina @ Mississippi State
The first week win for Will Muschamp was very impressive and not expected by many people out there! They competed for a full 60 minutes and did not give in after getting down 10 points early. They will need more of that resolve this week as the cowbells will be deafening and points will be hard to come by. The Bulldogs are looking for win No. 1 as they lost a last minute game against South Alabama in week 1 on a missed field goal in the last seconds. Dan Mullen’s seat will get warm very quick if he drops another to fall to 0-2. Get those cool pants ready, Starkville!
Cov’s Call—USC drops the BOOM! on the cowbells and enjoys their BBQ at Little Dooey’s as they sneak out of Stark-vegas!
That’s it for week 2. Hope you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
